Sisterhood
Nagi Gumba is situated at an altitude of 1650 m north of Kathmandu above the Budhanilkantha Temple. Only Nuns live in this monastery which is why it is also known as ‘Ani(Nun) Gumba’. About 200 Nuns practice Buddhism in this monastery and it even serves as a school for young nuns. Here, you can observe the simple way of life of the Nuns and even meditate like most visitors. You will find yourself in peace surrounded by the prayer flags, prayer wheels, prayer sounds and the smell of the incense.
Hike Highlights:
We drive approximately 35-45 minutes to reach the Narayanthan Mandir which is located in Budhanilkantha. Here you will visit the sacred site of sleeping Hindu deity Bishnu, resting on top of a bed of snakes. Your guide will share the deep cultural history of the temple. You will then hike for an hour and a half to reach Nagi Gumba. Nagi Gumba (NANG-KYI) is exclusively run by Nuns. Nagi Gumba is a meditation space where you can take your time to observe the nuns perform their daily routines within the Monastery and get an insight on the Buddhist Culture. You will also be able to see the Ganesh Himal, Langtang Himal and the amazing view of Kathmandu Valley. Then we hike back for 2 hours through the Shivapuri Conservation Area towards Sundarijal. You will pass through the lush pine forest, beautiful waterfalls and the drinking water dam. From here, you will return by a private vehicle to Kathmandu.
